Hyderabad: Crops in thousands of acres of land in Basar village of Mudhole mandal in Nirmal district have been submerged in flood waters due to the Godavari river swelling to dangerous proportions owing to heavy rains in its catchment areas for the past four days.
Priests of the Basar Saraswathi temple and villagers performed a ‘Shanti Puja‘ to the local deity, hoping that the flow of the Godavari river will subside and bring relief to the people from the floods of this magnitude which has not occured in the last 40 years.
The flood waters entered not only the temple, but also residential areas and commercial establishments in Nirmal district’s Basar, submerging them.
As the flood water flows from three directions, the devotees and the residents of Basar have nowhere to go, and the bus facilities have come to a standstill due to the effect of the flood waters.

Thousands of acres of land and fields in the villages near Basara such as Surli, Solapur, Labdi, and Kowtha among others, have been completely flooded due to the backwater effect of Sri Ram Sagar Project (SRSP).
Sainath, a farmer from Basar told media persons that many farmers have neither received Rythu Bharosa crop input assistance, nor have their crop loans been waived. He said that in such difficult situation, the floods have ravaged their crops and shattered whatever little hope they had to survive.
“The district in-charge minister has neither visited the flood-affected areas, nor has he given any assurance to the farmers,” he said. Shyamsunder, another farmer, appreciated the efforts of the district superintendent of police and the collector for the rescue and relief efforts, and said the electricity officials have been working without rest for the past 48 hours to ensure that the power-supply was not interrupted.
“Our request to chief minister Revanth Reddy is that once the flood subsides, an estimation of the crop losses be made through a survey, and the farmers who have lost their crops be compensated. The government should also provide compensation for the damaged household goods, as people are not even able to take their furniture out of their flooded houses,” he said.
The police and revenue officials have been reviewing the flood situation from time to time, and the officials have cautioned the people to be vigilant.
