Trump's Latest Map Move: Renaming New Mexico to 'New America'
President Trump has already renamed the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario, and now he has set his sights on a US state, floating a plan to rebrand New Mexico entirely.
Over the holiday weekend, Trump shared a map on Truth Social showing New Mexico with the word Mexico crossed out and replaced with America. The suggestion would effectively rename the southwestern border state as New America.
More recently, Trump signed another executive order changing Lake Ontario's name to Lake America, a move that came amid rising trade tensions with Canada.
That decision appeared to pay off for the company. MapQuest's general manager, Doug Berger, said the company took the same stance it had during the Gulf of Mexico rename, choosing to weigh in on the debate while keeping the map names users already knew. He credited a surge in the app's App Store rankings to the large number of people who downloaded it that weekend in response.
Apple and Google took a different approach. Both companies ultimately updated Lake Ontario's name to Lake America for their US users, following the same path they took when Trump pushed for the Gulf of Mexico to become the Gulf of America.
