Maharaja 2: Vijay Sethupathi Gives His Nod to Sequel

Vijay Sethupathi has given a major update on the much-awaited sequel to ‘Maharaja’, revealing that director Nithilan Saminathan has already narrated the story of ‘Maharaja 2’ to him.

Speaking at the audio launch of his upcoming film ‘Baththa’, the actor heaped praise on Nithilan’s writing and said he was impressed by the sequel’s story. “Nithilan is an excellent director. He has a great writing sense. He recently told me the story of ‘Maharaja 2’. It was so beautiful. Working with him was superb,” Vijay Sethupathi said.

The statement indicates that ‘Maharaja 2’ has progressed beyond mere speculation, with a story already narrated to the lead actor. Nithilan had also previously indicated that the sequel’s story was ready.

The original ‘Maharaja’, released in 2024, became a major success across Tamil and Telugu markets. In the Telugu states, the film was initially acquired for a modest theatrical price, with reports putting the business at around Rs 2–3 crore. It subsequently emerged as a profitable venture, with trade reports estimating Telugu-state gross collections at around Rs 15 crore.

That performance could make the Telugu theatrical market for ‘Maharaja 2’ considerably more interesting. The first film established Vijay Sethupathi as a strong draw among Telugu audiences, and the sequel is now likely to attract significantly more attention from Telugu distributors. However, the actual theatrical price will depend on the film’s scale, cast, promotional campaign and the business terms offered by the makers.

Meanwhile, ‘Maharaja’ is also expanding its international reach, with an English-language Hollywood remake in development. Vijay Sethupathi has said he would even be willing to act in the remake without remuneration if he is offered a role.
