Jazz Nation: Schubert Vaz Ensemble Brings Jazz’s Many Shades to NCPA

The National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) presents Jazz Nation, a six-member ensemble founded by pianist and keyboardist Schubert Vaz. Bringing together some of India’s seasoned jazz musicians, the ensemble presents an evening that reflects the diversity, depth and evolving spirit of jazz.

Founded in 2004, Jazz Nation has built a distinct identity within India’s jazz circuit, blending mainstream and contemporary jazz with influences of jazz funk and jazz rock. Led by Schubert Vaz, whose career spans over four decades at the Trident, Nariman Point, Mumbai, the ensemble brings together musicians with decades of experience across varied musical landscapes.

With each member bringing a unique voice to the ensemble, Jazz Nation moves effortlessly through intricate improvisations, rhythmic explorations and soulful melodies. Their performances combine technical brilliance with a shared passion for jazz, creating a dynamic experience rooted in musicianship, spontaneity and musical connection.

The ensemble features Schubert Vaz on keyboard and backing vocals, Aaria Laha on lead vocals, Anand Vaity on saxophones, William Fernandes on drums, Donald Pereira on guitar and Russell Fernandes on bass guitar.
