Masters of the Universe caused quite a stir among fantasy fans when it was announced as an upcoming, big-budget feature film. Starring He-Man, Skeletor and all the most-loved characters from the original cartoon series and corresponding toy line, the movie should have been a hit. Amazon MGM Studios was banking on it, but that investment has spectacularly failed.

MOTU opened on June 5, behind a huge marketing campaign that sent YouTube all a-flutter with trailer breakdowns, behind-the-scenes photos and cast interviews. According to Box Office Mojo, the film has earned over $109 million.
The massive number is still overshadowed by the film’s budget, which Variety reports as around $200 million.
Amazon MGM Still Banking on ‘MOTU’ Franchise

The movie has been labeled as a “flop,” but the PR machine keeps on churning. Despite the harsh reality of the numbers, filmmakers are taking a somewhat off-kilter, positive tone in comments to the press.
Head of domestic distribution for Amazon MGM, Kevin Wilson, said the film is “something truly special, and this opening is exactly the kind of critical first moment that validates our holistic distribution strategy.”
The rest of the statement made it clear that Amazon MGM execs are banking on streaming and other later-stage distribution to build upon MOTU‘s opening weekend, where the movie was eclipsed by the most recent offering in the Scary Movie franchise (a film with a much, much lower budget).
How Did Jared Leto Contribute to the Film’s Flop?

Masters of the Universe had all the ingredients of a summer blockbuster: a beloved franchise, a massive marketing campaign and decades of built-in nostalgia. Expectations were high. So, what went wrong?
As the film struggled at the box office, renewed attention turned to one of its stars Jared Leto. Across Reddit movie forums and other online film communities, some commenters have labeled the Oscar winner “box office poison.” FandomWire noted that several of Leto’s recent big-budget films, including Morbius and Tron: Ares, failed to meet box office expectations.
Missing: Two ‘MOTU’ Franchise Favorites

Casting Leto as Skeletor became a point of discussion among moviegoers after Masters of the Universe underperformed at the box office. However, it’s unlikely that any one casting decision alone determined the film’s commercial performance.
The film also kept two of the franchise’s most recognizable characters largely under wraps: Orko, He-Man’s magical companion, and She-Ra, the Princess of Power and star of her own successful spin-off franchise. While Orko was briefly teased in promotional materials, She-Ra was notably absent from the film’s marketing campaign.
Whether that was a deliberate effort to preserve surprises or simply a marketing decision remains unclear. Some fans have since speculated that featuring the characters more prominently might have generated greater excitement ahead of the film’s release, while others argued their absence helped avoid revealing key plot details.
Despite the film’s disappointing box office performance, Amazon MGM has continued to support the franchise, and a sequel has not been officially canceled. Whether future installments move forward with a similar budget or star-studded cast remains to be seen.
