The Guardians of the Galaxy are expected to be missing from Avengers: Doomsday, but the MCU already has their replacement lined up. After three of their own movies, alongside appearances in Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and Thor: Love and Thunder, the bunch of lovable a-holes mostly went their separate ways at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. While a new team was officially formed, it has yet to return in the three years since that movie was released.
The new look Guardians of the Galaxy team includes Rocket and Groot, now officially joined by Kraglin, Cosmo, Adam (plus his pet, Blurp), and Phyla. There will, presumably, be more cosmic adventures for the group, whether that’s in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 4 or another project, such as perhaps returning in the long-mooted Nova movie. Barring a surprise, though, which is certainly possible, they won’t be in Doomsday, which is already stuffed with superheroes from various teams.
The team-up event will have two different Avengers rosters – one led by Sam Wilson’s Captain America, and the New Avengerz from Thunderbolts* – as well as several members of Fox’s original X-Men. The sheer plethora of characters to fit in might alone help explain why there’s no room for the Guardians in Doomsday, but another of its teams serves as a more direct replacement anyway.
If Doomsday Is Like Infinity War, The Fantastic Four Are The Guardians Of The Galaxy

The Guardians of the Galaxy played a crucial role in Avengers: Infinity War, not least as the characters with the closest ties to Thanos. They were outsiders, arriving from the further reaches of the cosmos, who had to quickly forge alliances with the likes of Thor and Iron Man in order to take on the Mad Titan. And it was Gamora who proved central to Thanos’ plans, as he sacrificed her on Vormir in order to retrieve the Soul Stone.
While we don’t yet know exactly how Avengers: Doomsday will play out, it’s easy to see the similarities between the Guardians and the Fantastic Four. They have a family dynamic (a more literal one, in this case), and are also outsiders who’ll be coming from afar (another universe, this time), and will even have a member who might be slightly confounding to Earth’s heroes (then: Groot and Rocket, now: The Thing).

Iron Man (2008) is, in retrospect, the most consequential casting decision in modern blockbuster history — but at the time Marvel Studios and parent company Paramount were openly hostile to director Jon Favreau’s push for the lead actor he eventually got. Favreau later said he had to fight “tooth and nail” and the actor had to do a paid screen test, a screen-test deal almost unheard of for an A-lister. What was the executive objection to him?

Robert Downey Jr. had been arrested multiple times between 1996 and 2001 on drug and weapons charges, served roughly a year in California state prison (1999–2000), and was fired from Ally McBeal in 2001 after relapsing. The Avengers (2012) — the film that proved the shared-universe model could work, grossed $1.52 billion, and ended Phase One with Loki, Thanos’s mid-credits reveal, and the “swarm shot” of the team rotating in Manhattan — was written and directed by a TV showrunner best known at the time for Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly. Name him.
✓ Correct! Joss Whedon. Marvel hired him in mid-2010 partly on the basis of his uncredited script rewrites and his comfort writing ensemble team dynamics from Buffy/Angel/Firefly. He directed The Avengers (2012) and the follow-up Age of Ultron (2015), then exited the MCU and Marvel handed the next two Avengers films to the Russo brothers. To claim it, the seeker must sacrifice the person they love most by throwing them from a cliff. Thanos arrives on Vormir with one adopted daughter, weeps, and pushes her over the edge. He returns to the present as an old man, sits on a bench by the lake at the Avengers compound, and hands his vibranium shield to a younger Avenger as the symbolic transfer of the Captain America identity. To whom does Steve give the shield?
✓ Correct! Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) — the Falcon. At the closing panel of San Diego Comic-Con on July 27, 2024, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige brought the Russo brothers back on stage to announce a new title for the next Avengers film — previously labelled “The Kang Dynasty” before Jonathan Majors’s December 2023 conviction forced a pivot — and then unmasked a cast of actors wearing green hoods. The final hood came off Robert Downey Jr. RDJ is returning to the MCU, but not as Tony Stark. As whom?
✓ Correct! Doctor Doom — Victor von Doom, the Latverian dictator and Reed Richards’s lifelong nemesis, generally considered Marvel’s greatest comics villain. The next Avengers film, originally announced as Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, was retitled Avengers: Doomsday after Jonathan Majors was dropped as Kang following his December 2023 assault conviction. A worthy Avenger — or dusted in the snap?
More importantly, though, is the knowledge they’re bringing of Doctor Doom. The post-credits scene to The Fantastic Four: First Steps already set this up to some degree, with the masked villain seemingly about to kidnap Franklin Richards, but footage from San Diego Comic-Con has made it more concrete. It confirms there’s a connection and history between the Fantastic Four and Doctor Doom, with them seemingly all from the same universe. Reed Richards grabs him and calls him “Victor,” at one point, while Sue Storm says he was kind and caring before “losing everything.”
This positions them similarly to the Guardians: they have close ties and the most in-depth knowledge of the villain, his powers, and what he actually wants, which makes them crucial to Doomsday. In addition to that, while unconfirmed, it’s likely that Franklin Richards is key to Doom’s multiversal plans, not dissimilar to how Thanos had to use Gamora for his. This is all very encouraging for both Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, because it should position Reed as a central figure against Doom. The pair have one of Marvel’s greatest rivalries in the comics, and that deserves its place in the MCU.
The Guardians Of The Galaxy (& Star-Lord) Still Need To Return

As much as it makes sense why they might not be in Doomsday, which largely looks to be taking place on Earth(s) rather than out in space and isn’t lacking in heroes, the Guardians of the Galaxy should still return. Vol. 3 was a wonderful send-off to that iteration of the team, but there’s a lot of potential in new characters like Adam Warlock, who deserve much more than to be one-and-done (indeed, Adam’s story has hardly even begun).
The big challenge for bringing the team back for a fourth movie lies in the absence of James Gunn. The writer/director of the first trilogy is now heading up DC Studios, so it’s probably safe to assume he’s not going to make a return to Marvel anytime soon. It’s going to be a tall order for anyone to replace him given how personal those movies were, which might mean bringing them back as part of another movie is an easier option. Either way, though, after the tease of a new team, we should get to see it.
The same is also true of Star-Lord. The end of Guardians 3 promised that “The Legendary Star-Lord Will Return,” hinting at either an Avengers movie role or perhaps even a solo outing, but there’s been no sign of Chris Pratt’s hero. It seems more plausible that he’ll turn up in Avengers: Doomsday and/or Secret Wars than his former teammates, not least because he’s currently based on Earth (or was last thing we knew), so it’d feel strange if he didn’t turn up at all across these two movies. Ultimately, the Guardians of the Galaxy had a perfect ending, but should have a clear future, too.
