Two days before she was killed by her ex, the woman’s family had walked into a Maharashtra police station at 1 in the night to complain against the man. “Kuch nahi hoga (Nothing will happen),” the family was told by police.
On Monday morning, the third day, Rohit Yadav chased down his ex, Aarti Yadav, and hit her 15 times on the head with a spanner on a busy road, until she died.
“Why did you do this to me, why did you do this?” he howls in Hindi, and strikes again. He then tosses aside the bloodied spanner and walks off into the crowd.
The incident took place at around 8:30 am in Vasai’s East Chinchpada area when Aarti Yadav was heading to work.
“On Saturday also, accused Rohit Yadav had beaten my sister and broke her mobile. We went to the Valiv police station at one in the night to register a case, but instead of registering the case, the police sent us back saying come tomorrow,” Aarti Yadav’s sister told presspersons.
“We went back again on Sunday noon and were there all day. They called the man and hit him a few times and then let him go. Police boli kuch nahi hoga (The cops said nothing will happen),” the sister said, adding she wants justice.
Police say Rohit Yadav has been arrested and will be charged with murder. The man and the woman were neighbours and in a relationship for the last few years, police said. Of late, she had stopped contact with him, making him to suspect that she was having an affair with someone else, police added.
A video footage from the scene showed a large crowd watching the attack, but no one intervened to help the woman as the man continued to hit her.
The man did not flee the scene and sat on the steps near the body, a police official said.
