Earlier this week, Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced that his plan for city-run grocery stores includes a 30% discount on common items including meat, produce and dairy.
Those discounts will be subsidized by the city.
The mayor says the stores will not sell items like cigarettes and alcohol in order not to compete with local businesses and bodegas. Mamdani had pledged there would be one city-run store in each borough by the end of his term.
Kenny Minaya, the commissioner of the city’s Department of Small Business Services, talks about the city-owned grocery stores on “Inside City Hall.”
