Mandira Bedi made her Bollywood debut with the cult-classic Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. The actress, who featured in a supporting role in the Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol starrer, has shared some anecdotes from the sets of the Aditya Chopra film.

Mandira Bedi made the revelations on Kareena Kapoor’s chat show What Women Want. During one segment, Kareena highlighted a previous statement made by the actress-turned-sports presenter.

FYI: Mandira, in an interview, had said that shooting for Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge was not fun. Explaining her remark, Mandira said, Because unlike you, how graceful and beautiful you are when it comes to songs.

I started with a song, Mehndi Laga Ke Rakhna. I will tell you that if I have nightmares as a grown woman, it is about two things – choreographed dance and maths exams. They both give me cold sweat.”

Mandira Bedi added, “Saroj [Khan] ji was the choreographer and I remember her telling me ‘You know something, you are like Sunny Deol. He shakes his shoulder and you too shake your shoulders really well.

But as a woman and a female actor, you need to learn how to shake your hips,’ which I could not do. It was actually quite terrifying and still is. It is great to go to a party and then let off some steam and dance freestyle but when you are dancing to a beat, it is horrifying for me at least it is.”

Mandira Bedi added, “It started with the song. It was four days of the song. And I was like, ‘What am I doing here? I don’t belong here’. And I look at myself in that song and I am like ‘Oh gosh’.

I have grown a little bit of grace and elegance since then. I am still pretty bad but not as bad as I was then. It was a tough start.”

Mandira Bedi played the role of Preeti Singh in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge.
