VIJAYAWADA: The inaugural Women’s Andhra Premier League (WAPL) T20 tournament began at the ACA International Cricket Stadium in Mangalagiri on Saturday, providing a platform to identify and nurture young women cricketers in Andhra Pradesh.
Heritage Foods executive director Nara Brahmani inaugurated the tournament. Andhra Cricket Association president and MP Kesineni Sivanath and ACA secretary and Rajya Sabha MP Sana Satish Babu welcomed her.
Brahmani and former India women’s cricket captain Mithali Raj, the tournament’s brand ambassador, unveiled the WAPL trophy.
The franchise-based league features four teams — Rayalaseema Gen Stars, Godavari Eagles, Amaravati E-Champions and Vizag Firebirds. A total of 13 matches will be played over seven days.
Rayalaseema Gen Stars and Godavari Eagles played the opening match on Saturday afternoon, followed by Amaravati E-Champions and Vizag Firebirds in the evening.
APL Governing Council chairman Sujay Krishna Ranga Rao, ACA treasurer Dandamudi Srinivas, Apex Council member D. Vishnuteja, director of cricket operations Kalyan Krishna and Governing Council member Y.S. Ranganath were among those present.
