RIYADH — Years before Saudi Arabia was unified, King Abdulaziz bin Abdulrahman Al Saud was contemplating a journey home.
Riyadh had remained in his thoughts since he left the city in 1891.
During his years in Kuwait, historical accounts cited by the King Abdulaziz Foundation for Research and Archives, known as Darah, describe the young Abdulaziz leaving his home at night and heading alone to an isolated place in the desert.
There, away from the settlement, he would think about how Riyadh could be recovered.
The ambition was already larger than the return to a city. Darah's account says that signs of his leadership emerged during this period and that Abdulaziz saw in himself the ability to build a state.
His first attempt to regain Riyadh came around the Battle of Al-Sarif in 1901. It did not achieve its objective.
Several months later, Abdulaziz moved again.
This time he headed toward Riyadh with a small number of loyal men, beginning the journey that would lead to one of the defining moments in modern Saudi history.
The group was moving across a harsh landscape toward a city whose recovery would require secrecy, resolve and careful planning. The route itself became part of the operation.
Darah preserves a map identifying the secret route taken by King Abdulaziz to recover Riyadh in 1319H/1902, providing a geographical record of the journey that preceded the decisive moment.
On Jan. 15, 1902 — the fifth of Shawwal 1319H — the objective was achieved.
What could have remained the story of a daring return instead became the beginning of something far greater.
Darah identifies the recapture of Riyadh as one of the principal events in the history of Saudi Arabia because it marked the beginning of the unification phase that led to the return of the modern Saudi state.
From Riyadh, King Abdulaziz would spend the following decades bringing together other parts of the country.
And the city that had been the destination of a secret journey became the capital of an expanding state.
Thirty years after the recovery of Riyadh, the process reached its defining political milestone.
On Sept. 23, 1932, the royal order unifying the country under the name Kingdom of Saudi Arabia took effect. The Darah guide describes that announcement as the culmination of a process of unification and construction lasting nearly three decades.
The distance between those two moments cannot be measured only in kilometers.
And the route taken in 1902 became, in retrospect, the first road toward the Kingdom.
