Ranabaali’: Comeback Or Déjà Vu?

Vijay Deverakonda’s attempt at a larger-than-life period action hero has triggered a divided response. The Ranabaali teaser, released on September 9, has sent hardcore fans into overdrive, with many calling it the actor’s big comeback vehicle. But another section of viewers has been left underwhelmed, questioning whether the film offers anything genuinely new beneath its spectacular surface.

The biggest criticism is aimed at Deverakonda himself. Some viewers feel he is trying too hard to fit the theatrical warrior mould, with his rugged look, booming voice and shout-heavy dialogue delivery coming across as forced rather than natural.

Then there is the déja vu factor. Indian cinema has been flooded with ultra-violent period dramas featuring larger-than-life saviours battling colonial or historical villains while protecting oppressed communities.

For some viewers, Ranabaali risks looking like another entry in an increasingly familiar formula.

Online discussions have already drawn comparisons with other recent blockbusters, raising the question of whether even a lavishly mounted `800-crore production can stand out in a crowded mass-action landscape. But the teaser has plenty of admirers too.

A sizeable section of audiences on social media has been impressed by the film’s scale, particularly Nirav Shah’s 19th-century visuals and Ajay-Atul’s score.

Then there is Arnold Vosloo. The Deep Blue Sea and The Mummy star plays the British antagonist, adding an unexpected international flavour. But the biggest tease comes towards the end, when the teaser suddenly veers into intriguing dark-fantasy territory.

That could be the element that separates Ranabaali from the period-action crowd. Directed by Rahul Sankrityan (Shyam Singha Roy) and co-starring Rashmika Mandanna, Ranabaali is a crucial release for Deverakonda after a string of commercial disappointments. For the actor, this is more than another big-budget actioner — it is a chance to reclaim his theatrical clout.
