Kota Gullu: A Forgotten Kakatiya Masterpiece Waiting To Be Rediscovered

WARANGAL: Time may have weathered stones, kingdoms may have vanished and centuries may have passed. But the stories etched on the walls of Kota Gullu continue to speak of the extraordinary artistic legacy of the Kakatiyas.

Located in Ganapuram of Jayashankar Bhupalpally district, just about 9 km from the world-famous Ramappa Temple, this remarkable cluster of nearly 22 temples remains one of Telangana’s lesser-known heritage treasures.

Built during the reign of Kakatiya ruler Ganapatideva, the Kota Gullu complex brings together intricate stone carvings, richly sculpted pillars, mandapas, yali figures, celestial dancers and depictions from Hindu mythology. It offers a rare glimpse into the architectural imagination and cultural world of the 13th century Kakatiyas.

Epigraphic evidence indicates that Ganapati Reddy, the third son of Recherla Rudra, associated with the construction of Ramappa Temple, consecrated the main shrine dedicated to Ganapeswara and made land grants around 1234-1235.

Despite its proximity to Ramappa, Kota Gullu has remained largely outside the mainstream tourist circuit. Now, with renewed attention to heritage conservation and tourism infrastructure in the Ramappa region, the ancient temple complex is poised for a long-awaited revival.

The proposed integration of Kota Gullu into a wider heritage tourism circuit would give visitors an opportunity to experience another spectacular chapter of Kakatiya history, one that has remained hidden in plain sight for centuries.
