Hyderabad’s Historic Sites Have A History of Secret Tunnel Rumours
Hyderabad: A new underground tunnel, discovered near the Qutb Shahi tombs at Hyderabad's Golconda on Thursday evening has led to people thronging the place to have a look. While the recent discovery has piqued curiosity, the city's age-old historic sites have a long history of secret tunnel rumours.
As officials of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) intensify efforts to examine the tunnel, two other historic places in Hyderabad – Charminar and Golconda Fort - have a history of rumours related to secret tunnels between them. In 2025, a civil contractor found two underground arches while conducting digging works to construct a barrack for Hyderabad police, raising suspicion whether the arches lead to a tunnel connecting Charminar and Golconda.
Though officials from the State government and ASI detected a few arches and old structures that appeared to be tunnels, they could not confirm in spite of carrying out excavation works.
In 2012, rumors of a hidden Nizam-era tunnel and underground vault at a school in Saifabad (near the old Secretariat) had alsosparked a massive frenzy. The officials carried out a digging operation for a few days but later suspended it.
The latest development also has evoked a similar reaction among the public and historians, with a large number of people thronging the place since Thursday to have a glance at the area and take photographs with their smartphones.
