Delhi Govt Honours 116 Educators; CM Rekha Gupta Flags Infrastructure Gaps in Schools

The Delhi government on Saturday felicitated 116 teachers and principals with state awards on the occasion of Teachers’ Day. The Chief Minister of Delhi, Rekha Gupta, said the government is working to strengthen the city’s education system by addressing gaps in school infrastructure as well as curriculum.

Speaking at the Shikshak Mahakumbh Award event at Thyagaraj Stadium, Gupta said the government wants to take Delhi’s education system to greater heights, but improving basic facilities in schools remains an immediate priority, as per a PTI report.

The president of Delhi BJP, Harsh Malhotra, MP Basuri Swaraj, Education Minister Ashish Sood and other senior government officials were also present at the award ceremony.

The chief minister said several schools require essential repair and maintenance work, which include improvements to toilets, water facilities, whitewashing and other infrastructure-related work at schools. She also recalled an inspection of a reputed school that was boasted by the previous government. She found that a toilet did not have a gate and questioned the privacy of the girl students.

Apart from improving physical infrastructure, CM said that the Delhi government was also working on courses and curriculum. She added that the Education Department and Delhi Education Minister Ashish Sood are working continuously on these areas.

The chief minister also criticised the previous government, alleging that adequate work had not been carried out in the education sector over the past 12 years. Due to this, the current government had to begin by addressing basic deficiencies in the education sector.

On the occasion of Teachers’ Day, Gupta assured teachers and students that her government would continue taking steps to improve the education system and create better opportunities for children.

She added that the government would work towards addressing the remaining gaps and undertake initiatives focused on the education and future of Delhi’s children.
