Brooklyn Democratic Party Rule Changes: Mamdani Says They Defy the Will of Voters

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is publicly pushing back against a last minute effort to change the rules governing Brooklyn's Democratic Party, arguing the move would work against the will of voters who just reshaped the party's leadership in June. Mamdani didn't hold back in his criticism.

"I very much oppose these proposed changes, by the current Brooklyn Democratic Party chair," Mamdani said. "I oppose them because they are an attempt to circumnavigate the will of voters," he added.

The timing is what's raising eyebrows. This proposal comes right after a slate of reform minded candidates won 22 district leader seats during the June primary, a result that shifted the balance of power within the party. Those newly elected leaders won't officially take their seats until fall, though. That means Bichotte Hermelyn and her allies still hold a majority among current district leaders, who are scheduled to vote on the proposed rule changes Tuesday night, per the City Reporter.

In a video released by the Brooklyn Democratic organization, she went further, describing the plan as one that would "expand leadership" and "expand representation" within the party.

In a joint statement obtained by City and State New York, the two officials made their position clear. "New Yorkers deserve leaders who are committed to serving their communities, not rewriting rules to hold onto power," they said. "Changing the makeup of an executive committee on the eve of a leadership vote goes against what we believe in as Democrats and should not move forward."

With the vote scheduled for Tuesday night, it remains to be seen whether the mounting pushback from Mamdani, James, and Williams will be enough to stop the proposal from moving forward.
