Exclusive: All We Imagine As Light Director Payal Kapadia On Indian Cinema's Growing Global Recognition: "SS Rajamouli's RRR Paved the Way"

Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine As Light is receiving love from all quarters. After winning the Grand Prix at Cannes, the film earned two nominations at the 82nd Golden Globes Award. In an exclusive interview with NDTV, Payal talked about her film getting recognition on prestigious international platforms.

Payal Kapadia has credited SS Rajamouli’s RRR for paving the way for her film in the award circles.

Speaking about Indian films getting acceptance in Hollywood, Payal Kapadia said, “It has been happening over the years, step by step, with different Indian movies getting international releases and that has changed people’s view (towards Indian cinema). We all know the success of RRR already had the Indian film industry in people’s minds here (in Hollywood). This change has been going on for some time and I am also a part of that.”

Payal Kapadia also credited Mira Nair for her contribution to promoting Indian cinema and revealed that she has also watched All We Imagine As Light.

“I really hope that the path for women in the future gets easier. We’ve had filmmakers like Mira Nair before who have done so much for Indian cinema. She also came and saw our movie and she was very encouraging. That’s all we can do, be there for each other and encourage one another,” she said.

Starring Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha and Chhaya Kadam, All We Imagine As Light explores love, longing and loneliness in the bustling city of Mumbai through three women, two Malayali nurses — Prabha and Anu — and their friend Parvati, a cook.

All We Imagine As Light is produced by Petit Chaos, Chalk & Cheese, and Another Birth.
